Session 2: NEMA and the Rail Electrification Coalition
đź•’ Time: 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
📝 Description: Ever wonder, is there a feasible pathway (or multiple alternative pathways) to railroad electrification in North America? What role if any does government have? What factors must be considered? How can industries as critical as electric power and railroads communicate and plan throughout this transitional period? What do planners, manufacturers, technologists, investors, and policy makers need to know? The Rail Electrification Coalition (REC) promotes the adoption of electricity as the principal motive power of domestic railroad (freight and/or passengers) transportation and as an enabler of electric grid integration and innovation. The REC has recently concluded its second workshop on railroad motive power and electric transmission, development, and siting. It centred around diverse case studies, new innovations, business practices, entrepreneurship, and new technologies that can point the way to railroad electrification. One key technology that has implications as the broader mobility sector electrifies is Traction Motors. Traction Motors comprise all alternating-current and direct-current motors and associated control technologies specifically designed or utilized for the propulsion of electric vehicles. The medium/heavy duty market for traction motors includes heavy-duty construction vehicles.
Steve Griffith is an Executive Director of regulatory & Industry Affairs for NEMA’s Mobility Sector. His presentation will touch on the REC and its recent workshop, NEMA’s activities in Traction Motors, and a broader perspective of transportation electrification in North America.
