RAMS and System Engineer

 Company Summary:

Cad Rail has other facilities in Calgary, Lethbridge (under Caltrax banner) and has recently been selected by the ONxpress Transportation Partners association to provide all legacy fleet maintenance services for the Metrolinx rail fleet of approximately 1000 bi-level coaches and 90 locomotives. Cad rail’s delivery team will operate and maintain Metrolinx’s rail maintenance facilities in Etobicoke and Whitby, as well as in multiple overnight, along with mid-day light servicing facilities located across the Metrolinx train service area.

Summary of the role:

The RAMS (Reliability Availability Maintainability Safety ) and System Engineer Specialist will be responsible for performing reliability, availability, maintainability & safety activities, technical analysis and/or related system engineering work in accordance with the Metrolinx Legacy Fleet Maintenance and Operations Contract. 

The RAMS and System Engineer Specialist will report to the Manager Reliability Centered Maintenance and Engineering and partner with other sections to provide support across the project.  This individual will work collaboratively will the site leadership and management team to ensure all areas of System Engineering and RAMS processes are supported and the business priorities are translated into comprehensive actions.

Core Accountabilities:

  • Address RAMS deliverables to ensure all commitments are met and all customer recommendations, concerns and issues
  • Provide practical recommendations relating RAMS data and capitalize results to ensure performance improvements for the project
  • Ensure various KPIs and target are clearly set in accordance with RAMS performance
  • Manage and perform technical analysis relating to fleet
  • Work with business process and reliability improvement techniques
  • Understanding of customers’ products including technical specifications
  • Select the appropriate course of action in regards to equipment failures
  • Identify potential areas of risk/opportunities, close gaps and escalate as needed
  • Make recommendations, measure, identify and drive improvements in all aspects of fleet performance.
  • Track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) relating to fleet performance.
  • Champion reliability and availability analysis within the assigned areas of responsibility in the business. Promote optimization measures within the project.
  • Support cultural change management with the ability to address issues faced when introducing business improvement techniques
  • Ability to create, track and present overall Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure success
  • Support Root Cause Analysis and Problem-Solving using RCM methodologies, or agreed appropriate tools.
  • Ensure that all Health Safety and Environmental policies, processes and procedures are always adhered to.
  • Advise accordingly Senior Management of any developing issues or potential issues that could arise.
  • Produce timely relevant periodic reports, as required.

 And also:

  • Contribute to the maintaining of harmonious relationship with maintenance employees.
  • Manage and lead cross-functional process improvement projects and business wide improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with the Corporation’s applicable policies and procedures – including HR.
  • Provide any requested analysis to the Executive team.

 Qualifications:

  • University degree in an Engineering discipline relevant to job/equipment function.
  • 3 to 5 years working as a RAMS/System/Vehicle Engineer preferably in Rail Transit industries and a track record of at least 2 to 3 years demonstrating application of RAMS methods and analysis
  • Experience in controlling and being accountable for results and overall performance of a project with demonstrated ability to manage & track multiple KPIs
  • Excellent communication skills and impeccable ethics
  • Strong problem solving, project management and planning/organizing skills
  • Outstanding knowledge of the MS Office suite and above all, an in-depth knowledge of Excel.

 Nice to have:

  • Other previous experience in heavy industries, internal combustion heavy machinery
  • Licensed with Professional Engineers of Ontario
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Familiar with the Transport Canada methods for risk evaluation and assessment for railway systems safety assurance
