GLOBE 2016 Challenge Pitch Program

GLOBE 2016 Challenge Pitch Program

Published on February 3, 2016

GLOBE is North America's largest and longest-running Conference series dedicated to Business Innovation for the Planet.

From March 2-4, 2016, nearly two thousand business and government leaders from over 50 countries will come together to network and advance global business and sustainability agendas.  The prevailing theme for GLOBE 2016 is "innovation" and we are convening a number of sessions and discussions around the future of clean technology in various sectors.

The Challenge Pitch Program gives industry the opportunity to define technology challenges and then convene a working session with technology providers and potential funding partners to explore how to bring solutions to market.  Previous work (Sustainable Development Technology Canada in partnership with Pollution Probe) has estimated that the GHG emissions intensity of rail could be reduced by 40-45% from 2009 levels without fuel switching through investment in:

.               Idle reduction technologies

.               Intelligent transportation systems

.               Regeneration of dynamic braking energy

.               Advanced railcar materials

.               Stiffer track structure

.               Next generation diesel locomotives

Given that GHG emissions are linked directly to fuel consumption and hence potential cost savings, this is a significant opportunity.  A Challenge Pitch Program for rail could bring suppliers of technologies within these categories together with rail companies and members of the investment community to identify opportunities, challenges and barriers with respect to technology demonstration and adoption.  Depending on who supports the challenge, the scope of the discussion could be adjusted to focus on specific areas.  The goal of this discussion would be to identify promising emerging opportunities and initiate a process that results in concrete partnerships, deal flow, actions etc.

The session would cost $20k, which includes preparation support (materials and attendee recruitment), facilitation and space/logistics.
