Every year, Rail Safety Week serves as a reminder that safety is at the heart of everything we do in the railway industry. Whether it's a railway crossing, a maintenance operation, a manufacturing facility, a locomotive cab, or a rail yard, the decisions we make every day have a direct impact on the well-being of employees, customers, communities, and the public.
For suppliers, safety extends far beyond compliance. It drives innovation, influences investment decisions, shapes workplace culture, and inspires the development of new technologies and processes that make Canada's rail network safer and stronger.
As Rail Safety Week 2026 begins, the Canadian Association of Railway Suppliers (CARS) is proud to recognize the many suppliers who contribute to a safer railway industry every day. We are also reminded of the exceptional organizations that have been recognized through the annual CARS Safety Award.
The CARS Safety Award recognizes initiatives in people safety, innovation, technological advancements, outstanding achievements, and any other positive influence a supplier has brought forward to improve the overall safety of the railway industry.
Building Safer Workplaces Through Technology
In 2021, CARS recognized Universal Rail Systems for its Digital Action Tracking System (DATS), an innovative electronic safety management system designed to strengthen safety reporting and accountability throughout the organization.
The results demonstrated how technology can improve safety performance when paired with strong leadership and employee engagement. Since implementing DATS, Universal Rail reported a significant reduction in incidents, achieved more than 1,000 consecutive lost-time injury-free days, improved training compliance, and increased overall visibility into leading safety indicators.
Most importantly, the system helped ensure that lessons learned from incidents and near misses were shared organization-wide, helping prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Building a Safety-First Culture
The 2022 CARS Safety Award was presented to LinkUp International, a company whose commitment to workplace safety is embedded throughout its operations.
As a manufacturer and distributor of locomotive parts and assemblies serving customers around the world, LinkUp demonstrated that safety excellence starts with culture. Their dedication to creating and maintaining a safety-first environment contributed to an outstanding safety record during a period of continued growth.
In accepting the award, company leadership reinforced the belief that safety is not simply a program or policy but the foundation upon which successful businesses are built.
Training the People Who Keep Rail Moving
In 2023, CARS recognized Veronneau Solutions for its contributions to safety through education and training.
The railway industry depends on knowledgeable, well-trained professionals who understand the procedures, regulations, and best practices that keep people safe. Veronneau Solutions has built its reputation by helping develop those skills through practical, hands-on training programs focused on railway operations and safety culture.
By creating smaller, more personalized learning environments and ensuring both frontline employees and supervisors receive the training they need, Veronneau Solutions has helped reinforce one of the industry's most important goals: ensuring every employee returns home safely at the end of the day.
Advancing Emergency Response and Hazardous Materials Safety
The 2024 CARS Safety Award recognized International Name Plate Supplies Limited (INPS) for its Fireproof Hazmat Placards, an innovation designed to improve the identification of hazardous materials during emergencies.
The ability to quickly identify dangerous goods can be critical during a derailment, fire, or other emergency situation. Traditional placards may become damaged or destroyed under extreme conditions, making identification difficult.
INPS addressed this challenge by developing durable steel placards capable of remaining visible even after exposure to fire. This advancement helps first responders access critical information when time matters most, improving emergency response and enhancing public safety.
The innovation demonstrates how suppliers continue to solve real-world safety challenges through practical engineering and product development.
Addressing One of Rail's Most Persistent Risks
Last year's CARS Safety Award recipient, Signal Software, represents a different but equally important aspect of railway safety: human performance.
Fatigue remains one of the most significant operational challenges facing transportation industries worldwide. Signal Software's cloud-based Fatigue Risk Management System helps railway organizations identify, monitor, and manage fatigue-related risks before they become safety incidents.
By combining workforce scheduling data with scientifically validated fatigue modelling, the platform gives operators, supervisors, and scheduling teams greater visibility into potential risks and supports more informed decision-making.
Just as importantly, the technology helps foster a culture where fatigue management becomes a shared responsibility between leadership and employees, ultimately contributing to safer rail operations and healthier workplaces.
Looking Ahead
As we observe Rail Safety Week 2026, CARS extends its appreciation to all railway suppliers who continue to invest in safer workplaces, develop safer technologies, strengthen training programs, and contribute to a culture where safety remains a shared responsibility.
We also congratulate our past Safety Award recipients for their leadership and innovation.
