"Systra has been commissioned to undertake a study of potential enhancements to the Hudson Bay Railway to support plans to develop the remote northern line as a strategic national transport corridor and make the port of Churchill a key export gatway. The study has been commissioned by the Arctic Gateway Group partnership of 29 First Nations and 12 northern communities which owns the 1300 km railway, the deepwater Arctic port and the Churchill Marine Tank Farm. Systra will evaluate the current capacity of the line, and identify improvements which would be needed to support the operation of more and heavier trains and meet the standards required for full interoperability with North America's Class I rail network..." (Grantham, 2026)
