Transport Canada 117 Tank Car Web Posting

Transport Canada 117 Tank Car Web Posting

Published on March 12, 2015

As you are aware, Transport Canada has been working expeditiously to develop a new class of tank car for the transport of flammable liquids by rail.  The attached web links provide you with an update following our consultations on a proposed tank car standard.  The former TC 140, now called TC/DOT 117, is a product of industry, stakeholder and the Transportation Safety Board comments as well as ongoing technical discussions with US regulators.  Transport Canada remains committed to a harmonized tank car standard, retrofit requirements and timelines.

Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) Braking has been removed from the standard.  Instead, ECP requirements will form part of operational discussions on establishing appropriate braking requirements for flammable liquid trains.
